Peace Camp is about creating oneself and community in a positive nurturing environment. Peace Camp was born out of the desire to engage our young people early with values that are counter to the violence they hear and are exposed to daily. By focusing on the enhancement of self-esteem, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and antibullying, the campers will experience the opportunity to create and maintain a healthy, constructive, and balanced lifestyles. This three-week program consist of fun activities campers will interact in activities that build social confidence and emotional intelligence with the goal of being empowered to leave the program as a better version of “self.” They will learn how to navigate through the different settings in which their “best self” may be required, while also learning of the importance of how to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion during their everyday encounters amongst peers.
Peace Camp targets youth between the ages of 9 – 13. The campers will be grouped by age with the 9 – 11 years old in one group and the 12 – 13 in another. The younger group will be developing their own Superhero, and the older group will create their own Community. Each activity will have those goals in mind along with a special emphasis on creating conflict resolution skills, and financial literacy. Each day there will be a centering exercise in the morning not only to focus but as a tool to manage stressful situations.
Peace Camp isn’t an ordinary summer camp — but it isn’t like school, either. Students will learn by doing, listening, and engaging each other. Peace camp is where young people will build confidence in social skills and academic self-efficiency in a safe, supportive, and fun environment.
